What is Japanese Gypsy Rock?  This is a catchy phrase we use to describe our music, but it's not entirely accurate.  In spite of the very true fact that Kaz was born in Japan, very few of Kagero's songs are sung in Japanese. In fact, Kaz has been known to sing in several different languages for extended shows.  JW is half Japanese, and Rob is totally Jersey.  You do the math. Gypsy? Our songs often take inspiration from the unique scales and the no-holds-barred approach towards gypsy performance, often interacting with the audience and taking musical risks that feel natural to the moment.  Rock n Roll has always been a strong influence for Kagero.  Kaz's songwriting with Rob's steady rhythm coupled with JW's heartfelt bowing results in a combination beyond easy categorization. That is why we have coined the term "Japanese Gypsy Rock" and will continue to use it in all of it's marketable glory, in spite of (or because of) any inaccuracies or false expectations that may result.  As Kaz says, cultural confusion is our specialty.

KAGERO regularly travels throughout the New York Metro Area or crawls into the Kazmovan to gig in Jersey or parts North, South or West. The sound has been described as a melting pot of tonalities and rhythms from Asia, the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe. Sometimes the songs are beautiful imagery, sometimes sad folk tales, and sometimes silly songs about drinking.   But the tunes are always fun, and the show is often a very high energy dancing good time. Kagero’s world music goulash is very tasty -- even if you don’t always know what’s you’re eating. Just call us your local neighborhood urban-gypsophonic, border-jumping, international debtor’s prison groove-loving feel-good band next door.
KAZ (vocals, harp & guitar - Japan) was born in a Japanese village where he cut school to play music in local clubs until he was old enough to pack up his axe and see the world. As founding member and creative mastermind behind Kagero, Kaz pulls influences from every and anywhere, bringing genres and killer hooks together in novel ways. Kaz is almost entirely self taught and his unique musicianship is the result of intense and varied studies of musical traditions from around the world.

ROB (electric and standup bass, vocals - Jersey) has played throughout the New York area with professional musicians of many different styles. Rob loves heavy metal and ice cream.

J.W. (fiddle - Ohio) dropped out of regional orchestra to join the local urban garage-folk movement in early 2000. He’s been trying to unlearn the Suzuki method since the age of 6.

Kagero regularly records and performs with a revolving cast of guest musicians.  For a complete list of musicians, pelase check the liner notes on our CD's, available from iTunes, Bandcamp or at one of our many shows.
